Recalling Journals in Preschool Five Years Later

Tonya used a treasure box to motivate students to create one journal per week and also made time for them to read it in front of the class. The classroom writing center became a very popular self-directed learning activity.

The 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! Board is a visual aid to help young children set goals and visualize their language. In the example below we see how assessment with a three-year-old is easy through the use of making a 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! Board This method of assessment is ideal in both the classroom and at home. If we ask children the right questions we can help them tap their superpowers and become aware in not only academics, but in behavioral, physical and child-centered learning as well. The board pictured here is an example of how simple a first board can look.

The first 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! Board pictured here is the simplest format for schools, daycares and families to help children become child-centered learners. These boards work by including children in their education, teaching them when they are successful and bringing awareness to their power as a learner. This process worked in Tonya’s classroom as a catalyst for increasing prekindergarten knowledge.

For students ages 3-4 start with the letter cards representing the child’s name. Make two piles calling one “letters I know” and the other “letters I want to learn”. In Tonya’s classroom she used a shape puzzle and a number puzzle to help the children select a shape and number goal. After the number and letter goals are selected ask the student if they have any other goals they want to add.

For students ages 4-5, letter identification and sound identification could be used. Keep offering challenges as the child becomes more advanced.

In the 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! Boards pictured to the left and right, we see the progression of learning over time. In Tonya’s classroom she started with names in all capital letters and then as their language skills improved they moved on to the lower case letters. You can also see a word and a number in the upper example the student requested. The learning boards and journals that are displayed here inspired child-centered learning.

The exciting part about these videos is how this family using the 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! Board to accomplish family goals as well as personal ones. When the students in Tonya's classroom started focusing on their goals, they started to learn very quickly.

Most people know that they need to read with their children, but writing with and around children is also incredibly valuable to their lifelong learning abilities. Writing helps children understand the connection between spoken and written language. It also helps them develop fine motor skills by practicing writing themselves.

Regardless of the language spoken at home children can use 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! Boards to set goals for themselves. This encourages them to share and celebrate what they have learned. Please notice she points to her written language in this video clip. When a 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! Board is done in a student’s home language it enriches all of their linguistic ability.

The students in Tonya's class treated the puppets like friends. Below you'll hear a DLL preschool boy express his excitment using motivational puppets while learning capital and lowercase letters, along with their sounds.
