A joyful early-learning system built around Dot the Spot, helping preschoolers discover their voice as authors before they ever step into kindergarten.

For more than 30 years, Tonya Swainston has devoted her life to education and to the belief that every child deserves to feel confident and capable. That passion led her to create 1 2 3 Super Empowered !, a joyful approach to early language and writing that helps preschoolers enter kindergarten already knowing they are authors. Most people now simply know her as “Miss Tonya,” and at the heart of her work is Dot the Spot, a cheerful little puppy who helps young children understand punctuation and language structure in playful, approachable ways. Dot the Spot turns early writing into something fun instead of overwhelming, and Miss Tonya is working to bring Dot’s books into local bookstores so families and educators across New Mexico can easily access them.

Her approach is grounded in decades of real classroom experience across a wide range of learning environments. Miss Tonya has taught in both elite academic programs and Title I schools in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. She supported students with learning differences through the Peterson Learning Support Program at Albuquerque Academy and co-created the C.H.I.L.E.S. program, which received the 1994 Intel Grant for innovative full-inclusion education. Her work has always centered on equity, dual-language learning, family involvement, and child-focused instruction. Over time, she saw how powerful joyful early writing can be in building confidence and communication, which inspired both Dot the Spot and the broader 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! system.

Her mission is also deeply shaped by her family life. Miss Tonya has lived in North Albuquerque Acres since 2007. Becoming a mother through adoption gave her a profound understanding of how language shapes identity and belonging from the very beginning. Supporting her son, who has dyslexia, also showed her where traditional systems fall short for diverse learners. Balancing the needs of a gifted child and a child who learned differently strengthened her belief that writing confidence must begin early so every child starts school with a strong foundation.

Today, 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! is growing toward a statewide early-language and writing system that supports children from birth through graduation. Miss Tonya continues to train teachers, partner with schools, and support families so learning gaps can be prevented instead of addressed only after they appear. She is also developing a 2026 emergency education plan that uses Dot the Spot, portfolio-based growth tools, and prevention-focused strategies while honoring home language and culture.

Through it all, Dot the Spot remains a joyful guide who reminds children that writing belongs to them. At its heart, 1 2 3 Super Empowered ! is built on a simple belief shaped by both classroom work and family life: when children learn to write first, reading follows naturally. And when they are supported early and joyfully, every child can step into kindergarten already knowing they are an author. For Miss Tonya, this work is both purpose and calling. It is a way to restore hope to families, support teachers, and open doors for children across New Mexico.
